2001 National Finalists

Nahar Alam, Executive Director, Andolan—Organizing South Asian Workers - Jackson Heights, New York

Nahar Alam founded Andolan after her painful experience as an exploited immigrant domestic worker. Since 1998, Andolan has trained low-wage South Asian women to organize and fight exploitation based on their gender and immigrant status. It has successfully fought for back wages for numerous South Asian domestic workers. Alam is active in Domestic Workers United, a coalition of New York City domestic worker groups that successfully supported a New York City bill requiring standard contracts for domestic workers. In 2004, she launched the Campaign Against Diplomatic Immunity of UN Employees to ensure that diplomatic immunity would not be used to shield employers who treat domestic workers unfairly. By providing support and resources to workers through individual assistance, workshops, education, and organizing, Andolan is successfully challenging the treatment of often invisible, and exploited, low-wage immigrant workers.
