Michael Kane, National Alliance for HUD Tenants (NAHT) - Boston, MA To Michael Kane, grassroots organizing is “democracy in its purest form.” As executive director of NAHT, Kane advocates for 2.1 million lower-income families who live in privately owned, HUD-assisted, multifamily housing. To build tenant power, Kane helped create NAHT, a national field training and support system for local tenant leaders and organizers. Through NAHT, tenant associations across the United States work collaboratively to preserve affordable housing, protect tenant’s rights and promote tenant ownership and control. In 2001, the organization became the first national tenants organization in the United States to be accepted as a voting member of the International Union of Tenants, which has consultative status with the United Nations.
